A HEARING HEART (SHEMA)

The story of Solomon’s prayer is a powerful reminder of the impact of a humble and obedient heart. When Solomon was anointed king over Israel, he sought God’s favor through a sacrifice of one thousand burnt offerings. In response, God appeared to him, asking what He could do for him. Can you imagine doing something that touches the heart of God so deeply that He asks what He can do for you? This encounter reveals two important truths: God can be blessed, and He expects us to know what we want.

Solomon’s prayer is a model for us, demonstrating humility, self-awareness, and a focus on serving others. He recognized that his kingship was a result of God’s favor towards his father David, and he acknowledged his own limitations, calling himself a child. He then shifted his focus from himself to the people he was called to lead, asking God for a heart that would hear and obey, enabling him to guide them wisely. This is where we get our name, Hearing Heart – a heart that receives, understands, and obeys God.

The Hebrew word “Shema” implies awareness and consciousness in prayer, emphasizing the importance of being attentive to God’s voice and will. At Hearing Heart, we strive to cultivate this kind of awareness, recognizing that it is essential for living a life of purpose and fulfillment.
